This page lists specific guidelines for NEWSQUEST / United Kingdom communities.
What is the Gannett Foundation?
The Gannett Foundation is the charitable arm of Gannett Co Inc., owner of the Newsquest Media Group, one of the UK's largest publishers.
What is the Gannett Foundation Fund?
The Gannett Foundation provides funding to support local organisations in the area where Newsquest operates in the UK. The Quartet Community Foundation, on behalf of the Gannett Foundation and Newsquest, manages the Fund.
What does the Gannett Foundation support?
The Gannett Foundation supports projects which take a creative approach to fundamental issues such as education and neighbourhood improvements, economic development, youth development, local problem solving, assistance to disadvantaged or disabled people, environmental conservation and cultural enrichment.
We value projects that bring lasting benefits to communities served by Newsquest newspapers. While preference may be given to ideas which create a durable legacy for the community, we will consider single events or projects of limited duration that otherwise meet our criteria.
We will favour projects that demonstrate good planning, oversight and financial responsibility. You must submit copies of your most recent accounts (where required by the Charities Commission) or other appropriate financial information, together with any supporting materials and details of your organisation’s managing committee.
Is there anything that is definitely excluded from getting a grant?
Grants will not be given to:
- organisations that received a grant from us within the last two years
- organisations which are not registered charities
- national or regional organisations unless the project addresses specific local community needs
- state or privately-run schools (other than special needs)
- hospitals (other than hospices), medical or research organisations
- animal charities
- political or religious organisations or causes
- fund salaries, professional fees, day-to-day running or maintenance costs
- endowment funds
- general appeals or multi-year campaigns
What size of grant can my group apply for?
Typically our grants are made for substantial projects which require and merit awards of between £5,000 and £10,000. We will of course also entertain more modest applications, but we actively encourage imaginative and ambitious projects on a bigger scale. And we are also able to join with other contributors to support elements of larger projects.
How can I apply?
Applications are invited from areas where a newspaper owned by Newsquest Media Group circulates. Applications must be submitted on the approved application form, which may be downloaded or obtained from your local Newsquest newspaper office.
The completed form should be sent to the local newspaper office address. Do not send applications to Newsquest Media Group.
When should I apply?
UK Grants are made once a year, in the autumn. The time is publicised in the local newspapers.
Are there any conditions of Grants?
The actual use of all grants will be monitored by the relevant local newspaper editor, to whom successful applicants must report within 12 months of the grant. The newspaper will expect you to co-operate with reasonable requests for publicity of any grant given.
