2009 Highlights Gannett Foundation helps to improve lives in the communities served by Gannett Co. Inc. and beyond. Our primary mission is to support the future of our communities and the future of our industry. In 2009, grants and matching gifts totaled $7.6 million. • Most of our grants go to grass-roots community programs, educational efforts and projects supporting young people and families. In 2009, the challenge was to make the best use of our resources as demand in communities increased due to economic hardships. We focused on organizations providing direct services to those in need, such as food banks, emergency shelters, transitional housing programs, and vital services for the elderly and disabled. • GannettMatch, our employee matching gift program, matched more than 4,100 gifts totaling approximately $1.3 million. • In the United Kingdom, more than $800,000 was given to community organizations working to benefit disadvantaged youth, seniors and the disabled. • Journalism training and education programs are a key part of our grantmaking. Media-related funding focuses on diversity and promotion of the First Amendment. Projects funded ranged from journalism workshops for minority students in high schools and colleges to multi-media and web training for journalists. |
