Gannett Foundation’s mission is to support the future of our communities and the future of our industry. In 2005, grants and matching gifts totaled $11.3 million. • Most of our grants go to grass-roots community programs, educational efforts and projects supporting young people and families. • In the United Kingdom, nearly $1 million was given to community organizations working to benefit disadvantaged youth, seniors and the disabled.
• GannettMatch, our employee matching gift program, once again increased over last year with nearly 7,000 gifts totaling more than $1.9 million. Matching gifts related to Hurricane Katrina amount to nearly $100,000 to date.
• Journalism training and education programs are a key part of our grantmaking. Projects funded ranged from journalism workshops for high school minority students to a simulated press training lab at West Virginia University. All media-related funding focuses on diversity and promotion of the First Amendment.
